Is It Worth Building Your Own Automotive Exhaust System?

There’s a strong feeling of satisfaction when you do things yourself, and that’s especially true when it comes to your vehicle. Custom systems are what make your car or truck unique, and there are dozens of advantages when you do the work yourself. But creating your own exhaust system can actually be a disadvantage, both to your wallet and safety. If you’re thinking about crating your own exhaust system, try taking a deeper look into the work that’s involved. Maybe you’ll think otherwise.

A lot of people think creating their own system will save them money, and sometimes this is true. But creating your own exhaust system will most likely cost just as much, if not more, than purchasing one. If you want to save money by choosing the cheapest materials, like aluminum instead of stainless steel, your exhaust system will corrode and rust in almost no time at all.  Choosing crush bent over mandrel bent tubing won’t allow exhaust to flow as well, making your system loud and unsafe. So it’s already a given that you won’t save money on materials.

If you decide to buy quality materials, you’ll end up paying what you would at a manufacturer, but there are so many other things that can go wrong when you build your own exhaust system.

If you don’t know much about welding or fabrication, simply put, installing your own exhaust system is going to cost you. Hanging an exhaust system is actually a complicated process. The weight and balance need to be exact, and perfecting those aspects might require creating your own mounting points, which will cost you even more money and time.

When you’ve completed your exhaust system, you’re probably going to need to readjust, if not completely reinstall the entire system because components are off. Or the poor quality will simply use up excessive amounts of power every time you drive. After all of your hard work, you’ll probably result to paying for an aftermarket system anyway.

In short, you’re not saving yourself any money or time creating your own exhaust system. It would be wise to either leave it to the experts or get a cat-back exhaust kit. Out of all the components of your vehicle, your exhaust system isn’t something you want to take lightly. Having experts take care of your exhaust system will ensure the best performance for the longest possible time, and that’s getting your money’s worth.
